General information only

HomeDampLab publishes general information about mold, moisture, odors and household cleaning. It is not professional advice for your home, your health, your insurance policy or your legal situation. Every home is different, and we can’t see yours. Before you act on anything you read here, consider your own circumstances and, where it matters, ask a qualified professional.

Health

We don’t give medical advice, and nothing on this site is a diagnosis or a treatment recommendation. If you have health concerns you think may be linked to mold or damp, talk to a doctor. For official health information, see the CDC’s mold page and the EPA’s mold page.

Cleaning products and safety

Always follow the label and the safety data sheet (SDS) of any product you use. Never mix bleach with ammonia or with acids such as vinegar. Ventilate the area and wear gloves, eye protection and a well-fitting N95 respirator when cleaning mold. Our chemistry explanations are based on public safety data sheets and official sources, not on laboratory tests we have run.

When to call a professional

The EPA notes that mold areas of about 10 square feet or less can usually be cleaned by the homeowner, and that larger areas call for its remediation guidance and an experienced contractor (EPA, Mold Cleanup in Your Home). Mold in HVAC systems, after sewage or contaminated water, or in the home of someone with health concerns also calls for professional help.

Costs, insurance and estimates

Cost figures, insurance scenarios and tool results are estimates based on the sources and assumptions we state on each page. Real prices vary by location, contractor and the condition of your home. Insurance coverage depends on your own policy and your insurer’s decision, so check your policy documents and ask your insurer or agent.

Tools

Our calculators and tools run in your browser and use the formulas and assumptions explained on each tool page. They are aids to decision-making, not guarantees. Weather-based results depend on third-party forecast data that may be incomplete or change.

Advertising, links and brands

This site is supported by advertising served by Google. Advertisers have no say in what we write. We don’t publish sponsored content or accept free products. If we ever use affiliate links, we will say so clearly on the page. Product and brand names belong to their owners and are mentioned only to explain what a product contains. Links to other websites are provided for reference; we are not responsible for their content.
